Personal Statement – Randi Chandrasekara

I am a graduate of Thompson Rivers University, earning my Bachelor of Communication and Digital Journalism, majoring in Media Studies, with Dean’s List recognition. My academic journey has equipped me with the skills and experience to thrive in public relations, where I aim to build meaningful brand relationships and create a positive impact in the communities I serve.

During my time at TRU, I developed strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities through hands-on projects and coursework aligned with the university’s learning outcomes: Connection, Engagement, Exploration, and Local-to-Global.

  • Connection: I honed my ability to cultivate relationships with peers, faculty, and industry professionals, developing clear and effective oral, written, and visual communication skills essential for client and stakeholder engagement.
  • Engagement: I gained practical experience in crisis communication, strategic media relations, and brand reputation management, working with local businesses to design PR campaigns that supported their social and economic goals.
  • Exploration: I strengthened my creative and technical capabilities in writing, editing, design, photography, and digital content creation, preparing me to produce compelling media and campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Local-to-Global: Coursework on Indigenous voices and cultural heritage expanded my intercultural awareness and cross-cultural communication skills, enabling me to design inclusive campaigns and approach corporate social responsibility from both local and global perspectives.

Graduating with dean’s list recognition has reinforced my commitment to excellence in communications and digital marketing. I am ready to apply my knowledge, creativity, and strategic thinking to deliver impactful campaigns, foster strong relationships, and contribute to the growth of brands and communities. First Nations Heritage and Laws have enabled me to enhance my understanding of intercultural awareness and principles, which will help me develop effective PR campaigns for various audiences, whether working with multinational corporations, NGOs, or government agencies in the future. This learning outcome provided me with the experience of adapting to different cultural contexts and communication styles, and effectively practicing cross-cultural communication. It also allowed me to consider corporate social responsibility (CSR), which focuses on the local and global levels of professional work settings in the future.
